Shockwave From Meteor That Struck Russia Shook The Earth Twice-- First Measured Of Its Kind: Starting New Details

A massive meteor that struck Russia created a shockwave that circled the world twice.

The powerful shock wave is the first of its kind observed.

The meteor's impact released energy equivalent to 30 Hiroshima atomic bombs or 460 kilotons of TNT.

into the atmosphere. The scientists made their discovery using data from global stations that measure low-frequency waves. They fond that the meteor that hit Russia last February resulted in a shock wave that shook the earth twice over.

It's the first evidence of this phenomena since the International Monitoring System  begain. The International Monitoring System was designed to pick up evidence of nuclear tests-but it gave startling new information about the shock wave.

It was the biggest space impact since the 1908 Tunguska meteor.

"For the first time since the establishment of the IMS infrasound network, multiple arrivals involving waves that traveled twice round the globe have been clearly identified," a researcher wrote in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.
