Parasailing Accident Panama City Victims' Parents Speak Out: Recovering Slowly, One Victim Walking [Update, Video]

Two teenage girls were seriously hurt Monday in a freak parasailing accident in Panama City Beach, Fla. Their condition is improving slightly. The incident was caught on camera (scroll down for video).

The parasailing accident involved best friends Alexis Fairchild and Sidney Good, who remain in critical condition. The two 17-year-old girls from Indiana nearly lost their lives on vacation when the cord tethering their parasail snapped free in high winds. They zigzagged toward shore and, in a tragic parasailing accident, smashed into the thirteenth floor balcony of a condominium, then a power line, then finally landed on an SUV parked behind the complex. A cell phone video captured the terrifying parasailing accident.

Both suffered head trauma and severe cuts. Fairchild has undergone spinal surgery.

The two seem to be improving medically. Sidney had been able to give her parents a thumbs up yesterday, and after spinal surgery, Alexis waved at her parents. Today, however, Alexis was able to begin walking.

On Thursday, the parents of the victims spoke out about the accident.

"We jerked a little bit and sat there for about a minute or two and that's when the cable had snapped and I'd seen them going away. I was just in complete shock during all of that," said Collin Good, Sydney's father.

"This happened while we had her daughter and, you know, we couldn't do anything. All we could do was finally get in contact with them after this happened and, you know, be there for both of them," said Amy Good, Sidney's mother.

Three days after the incident, Alexis is improving.

"She was able to start walking and as soon as she had seen sid, she was in her room, wanting to hold her hand, then went around and back in her wheelchair again and wanted to go back to see her and sit with her for a bit," said Michael Fairchild, Alexis's Father.

Sidney's injuries are apparently more significant.

"For her to just be responding and all lifting a finger and actually being able to move is like walking to us," said Mrs. Good.

"Anytime we get a thumbs up or an acknowledgement to anybody. It's a shot of adrenaline to us," said Eric Good, Sidney's Father.

'We truly can't say enough about the outpouring of kindness and concern we've received from so many," the families said.

Witnesses say the girls were screaming in terror. One witness said of the fall, "We were yelling, 'Please miss the building, because I knew that if they slammed into it, because at the speed they were going, that it would be pretty traumatic."

Jeff Jones, the owner of the parasailing company, stated, "While we adhere to best practices to minimize the risks associated with water sport activities, sudden weather conditions can and do occur."
