MLB Standings For American And National League: Pirates Best In NL, Red Sox Best In AL - Who Can Catch Them?

MLB standings for American and National league with the all-star break looming has the Pittsburgh Pirates with the best record overall.

With the most amount of wins and least amount of losses, it's been a long time that during this point of the season, when someone looks at the MLB standings for American and National league, the Pirates are at the very top.

Though Pittsburgh has such a good record, the St. Louis Cardinals are only two games back and that's from within the same division. The Cincinnati Reds are only 4.5 games back, which means this top-heavy division takes up playoff spots for the MLB standings for American and National League.

"It got a little band-wagony the last two years. That's one of the lessons you learn from there," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle told MLB.com, acknowledging Pittsburgh's late-season collapses the past two years.

The Atlanta Braves have a comfortable five game lead over the Washington Nationals and in the west, it's a fight for every team to stay above .500. The Arizona Diamondbacks lead the Colorado Rockies and L.A. Dodgers by 3.5 games.

In the American League, the Boston Red Sox are sitting pretty with the best record after a disappointing season a year ago. Baltimore, New York and Tampa Bay are chasing the Bo Sox, but aren't quite yet in striking distance.

For the moment in the AL Central, it's been a two-team race between the Tigers and the Indians, with Detroit leading Cleveland by two games. Kansas City Royals are in the background, out by six games.

Over in the west, the Oakland A's and Texas Rangers are neck-and-neck for first place. The Athletics lead by 1/2 a game.
