Why 'Orange Is The New Black' Is The Next Big Hit: Will It Beat 'House Of Cards' And 'Arrested Development'?

With Netflix set to debut new original series "Orange is the New Black," here are just a few reasons why it could be the next big hit, and why it has the potential to supersede "House of Cards" and "Arrested Development."

1. The Creator

Jenji Kohan helms this new half-hour dark comedy, who previous worked on Showtime's hit show "Weeds." So far, Netflix and Kohan seem like a match made in heaven.

"I pitched to them while I was still doing 'Weeds'. They bought the series off the pitch. They said, 'OK, let's make 13 of those,'" mused the 43-year-old mother-of-three. "That never happens."

2. The Cast

Two things stand out in this ensemble cast: star power and diversity.

Starring alongside Taylor Schilling as Piper Chapman is Jason Biggs ("American Pie"), Laura Prepon ("That 70's Show") and Natasha Lyonne ("Scary Movie," "American Wedding").

In addition, the show also has actresses like Michelle Hurst, Samira Wiley, Danielle Brooks, Laverne Cox, and Lolita Foster to round a female-driven show that also deals with same-sex relationships. No one is going to call "Orange is the New Black" out on not being diverse.

3. Season 2

Without even premiering, Netflix has already renewed the original series for a second season.

"It is unusual," admits the company's VP of original content Cindy Holland to the New York Times. But the decision reportedly comes from wanting shorter wait time between seasons.

"Our hope is that we can launch [season 2] in late spring to early summer, rather than midsummer." So don't sweat getting invested in a soon-to-be cancelled Netflix show. It's guaranteed to come back!

4. "House of Cards" and "Arrested Development"

Yes, the fact that Netflix has buzz-worthy hits like "House of Cards" and "Arrested Development" sets the bar high for "Orange if the New Black," but it also means there is a built-in audience looking for new material as they wait for these shows to come back.

With the recent success of "Arrested" and "House of Cards," it's possible that "Orange is the New Black" can capitalize on the Netflix momentum and succeed even better.
