San Francisco Plane Crash Victims Identified As Chinese Schoolgirls, 16; Crash Was Likely Due To Pilot Error

The San Francisco airplane crash victims have now been identified. The San Francisco International Airport crash is also currently being investigated as possibly involving pilot error.

The Asiana Airlines planes have had both black boxes recovered. Federal investigators plan to interview the cockpit crew.

Students Ye Mengyuan and Wang Linjia were the Chinese schoolgirls killed on Asiana Flight 214. They were both 16.

Their plane, a Boeing 777, crash landed in San Francisco. 182 other passengers were injured in the horrific crash, but they were the only two fatalities.

The girls' bodies were discovered by medics on the runway next to the burning plane.

The South Korean airline, Asiana Airlines, has now ruled out a mechanical failure. Deborah Hersman, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, said Sunday that the crash landing at the San Francisco International Airport may have been due to pilot error.

Hersman said the crash may have been due to the "pilot's recognition of what's going on".

She emphasized the pilot's duty "to be able to assess what's happening and make the right inputs to make sure they're in a safe situation. That's what we expect from pilots. We want to understand what happened in this situation."

However, she did say that there is no indication that there was any sort of criminal act or terrorist involvement.

The girls killed, Ye Mengyuan and Wang Linjia, have been identified as 16-year-old students of Jiangshan Middle School in eastern China.

Asiana Airlines CEO Yoon Young-doo, said to press, "We think there was no engine defect." The girls were sitting in the back half of the plane when it crashed, he said.

The two girls killed were with several other students from the competitive, affluent school in Zhejiang. A total of 29 students and five teachers embarked on the trip-but they will come home with two less.

Investigators will examine the black box and cockpit voice recorder in an attempt to understand how the crash occurred.

After the crash landing, the flight slammed into the runway and caught on fire. Most on board escaped via emergency slides as flames engulfed the plane.

The wounds of the 182 injured ranged from bleeding to spinal fractures.
