Teresa Heinz Kerry Wife Of Secretary of State John Kerry Hospitalized After Breast Cancer Battle, Suffered Possible Seizure And Was In Critical Condition

Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife Of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, was hospitalized at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on Sunday night. Her medical condition is unspecified, but a source says she suffered from a seizure while on the island of Nantucket.

A source close to the Kerry family said Teresa was hospitalized after showing symptoms similar to a seizure, USA Today reports. The 74-year-old arrived at the hospital in critical condition but was stabilized by doctors.

In 2009, Teresa was treated for breast cancer. The cancer was detected in her left breast after she had her annual mammogram, according to USA Today. After another growth was detected in her right breast, Kerry underwent lumpectomies in both breasts at a Washington hospital.

According to The Associated Press, after the first lumpectomies, doctors believed the growth in her right breast was benign. However, two other doctors later found it to be malignant. In November 2009, Teresa had another set of lumpectomies performed at Massachusetts General Hospital.

On Sunday, John Kerry was with his wife as an ambulance first transported her to Nantucket's hospital, and also while she was flown to Boston. The couple married in 1995.

Teresa Heinz Kerry is heir to a ketchup company fortune.  According to USA Today, Forbes magazine estimated in 2004 that Heinz Kerry's wealth was $750 million.

Before his wife's medical emergency, Kerry had planned to return to Washington on Monday and participate in economic talks with Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and senior Chinese officials.
