Beyond: Two Souls Gameplay Preview [VIDEO]: Is It Better Than The Last Of Us?

With the success of The Last of Us and its controversy surrounding the similarity between the Ellie and Ellen Page, the actress' upcoming game project Beyond: Two Souls has a lot of anticipation built up around it.

But what do people make of the Quantic Dream game upon gameplay preview?

Like Quantic Dream's previous titles Fahrenheit and Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls comes with a highly experimental and divisive template. Players play as the Ellen Page-inspired Jodie Holmes, a young woman with supernatural abilities.

For The Sixth Axis, trying out the gameplay preview demo made the reviewer see Beyond: Two Souls as "a perfect send-off for the PlayStation 3."

"Beyond: Two Souls isn't completely unfamiliar yet does enough to set itself apart from every other major release this year," writes Sixth Axis contributor Jim Hargreaves.

"Sporting Hollywood names such as Ellen Paige and Willem Dafoe, Two Souls offers a one-of-the-kind experience that will cement the bond between videogames and cinema for many years to come."

This is similar praise The Last of Us received for its immersive storytelling and morally ambiguous leads.

For International Business Times, however, the gameplay preview demo experience turned out to be less than stellar.

"From what I've played, it's another mixed bag," writes IBT contributor Edward Smith. "Beyond is set to continue the Quantic Dream tradition of posing questions, of starting debate, but failing to produce good video games at the same time."

"Beyond struggles to cross-pollenate films with games. Both halves of the hybrid are lacking, comprising clumsy mechanics and dreadful writing. Here's hoping I'm wrong."

So far, things seem uncertain as of whether Beyond: Two Souls can match up The Last of Us in terms of sophistication and gameplay.

Most recently, IGN reports that The Last of Us has sold 3.4 million copies in just three weeks, making it the fastest-selling PS3 game of 2013.
