Legend Of Zelda 3DS, Wii U Updates: Eiji Aonuma Talks Wind Waker HD, A Link To The Past Remake, And Retiring From Zelda

With several Legend of Zelda titles for the 3DS and Wii U coming up, Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma shared some insights about the Wind Waker HD remake, A Link Between Worlds, and moving on from the Zelda franchise.

"It feels like we're really able to create the complete Wind Waker experience on Wii U," said Aonuma to Wired. "In addition to the graphics, we've also got the GamePad and there are lots of other pluses that we're finding in converting to the Wii U system.

"When I suggested moving forward with Wind Waker HD, internally there was actually a lot of pushback. But in talking to our counterparts in the U.S., that wasn't actually the case, people didn't have that negative reaction maybe anymore to that younger Link."

But despite his adoration of Wind Waker, Aonuma says A Link to the Past remains his biggest inspiration as a game creator.

"I didn't make the original, but it was the first game I played that opened up my eyes to all the things a videogame can be. It's the game that inspired me to make games."

With A Link to the Past often being hailed as a masterpiece, its 3DS remake, A Link Between Worlds, brings a huge amount of pressure, some of which Aonuma definitely feels from fans and the Internet.

"If we respond too directly to the things the fans are asking for, they'll end up playing a predictable game. But with the Internet, social networks and Miiverse, the fans have more ways than ever to voice their opinions," said Aonuma to Edge.

"We hear that input, and then we think about how to deliver something even better than what they're asking for."

And after a decade with the Zelda franchise, the 50-year-old veteran game creator may be looking to hang up his Link hat and move on.

"I'm 50 now, so I only have about ten more years to make games at Nintendo. I want to try all sorts of new things before it's too late; I don't want to get to the end of my career and only have worked on Zelda."

"But every time I come up with some good new ideas, they end up being used in a Zelda game!"
