iPad 5, iPad Mini 2 Release Date: September Launch Almost Guaranteed For Bigger iPad With Retina Display, Slimmer Bezel, iPad Mini 2 Delays Imminent

The rumored release of the iPad 5 will happen this September, according to a report by DigiTimes. Citing “sources from upstream supply chain,” the new device will feature a 9.7-inch screen with Retina Display, a slimmer bezel and a bigger viewing area.

The iPad Mini 2, on the other hand, faces delays in its launch as it could be postponed until the end of the fourth quarter of 2013. The 7.9-inch device will have a reduced bezel size as Apple aims it to have “a bezel-less design” similar to that of Samsung and HTC’s larger-size smartphones.

Monday’s report by the DigiTimes is in line with an earlier report in June that indicated that Apple could start the production of the iPad 5 sometime this July and August, with the possible release date coming in the third quarter of 2013.

The iPad Mini 2 has been reported to be delayed in both production and release, with an announcement date possibly coming this November, since Apple is “still considering whether to adopt a Retina display for the device.”

According to the International Business Times, KGI Securities Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted in April that the iPad Mini 2 would be launched later than previously expected due to complex “technical challenges” in the manufacturing process.

Analysts at NPD’s DisplaySearch group have also relayed doubt in Apple’s plans to release a Retina Display-featuring iPad Mini this year.

DisplaySearch noted that the company will release a thinner iPad mini later this year, followed by an updated version in the first quarter of 2014 that will feature Retina Display and an improved processor.

Amidst all the release date rumors, however, and the allegedly looming announcement of a new iPad, suppliers are yet to receive a solid mass production schedule from the Cupertino tech giant.

It has been reported that Apple is satisfied with the iPad 5’s pilot production. The company is expected to give shipment estimates for its flagship tablet by the end of this month or early August.
