Steve McQueen's 1952 Camper Goes Up For Auction In Santa Monica

Steve McQueen may have been a motorcycle racer-but the legendary actor also had a camper, it has been revealed. The camper will be up for auction.

McQueen's camper was a custom affair atop a 1952 Forest Green Chevrolet 3800 series pickup truck. It'll go on at the Barker Hangar at Santa Monica Airport.

The sale is expected to fetch between $125,000 and $150,000.

McQueen got the Chevy in '78, but he owned over 60 rare vehicles throughout his life. The auction listing says the camper in question "is a one-ton long-bed pickup truck and is much sought after by customizers, hot rodders and old truck collectors."

The buyer could both dive what he drives and sleep where he slept. In fact, it was one of McQueen's final vehicles.

The Mecum listing says, "this truck's significance takes on greater historical importance as it was the last vehicle to transport McQueen from his Santa Paula home to the Ventura County Airport on Nov. 3, 1980."

"From there he would be whisked to El Paso, Texas, for his final cancer surgery in Juarez, Mexico. Accompanying McQueen in the camper was the Reverend Bill Graham," the listing said.

The camper was just one of many vehicles McQueen owned-but had a special place for him.

McQueen's wife, Barbara Minty McQueen, said that "Steve's collection of cars and motorcycles cluttered the private driveway that serviced a row of homes near the beach, but that didn't stop him from buying whatever he wanted."
