Oldest Man In The World At 112 Says A Banana And Six Anacin Pills A Day Keep The Doctor Away; Rare For Men To Live Over 110, 90 Percent Are Women

The oldest man in the world is 112-year-old Salustiano Sanchez Blazquez of Grand Island, New York. Today, the Guinness World Records has named him the world's oldest man. He reveals his secret to a long life.

Blazquez celebrated his 112th birthday last month. His predecessor, Jiroemon Kimura of Japan, died on June 12 at age 116.

So what is the secret to Blazquez's long life? According to Parade, Salustiano says he's lived this long because he eats one banana every day and takes a daily dose of six Anacin pills. Anacin is a combination of aspirin and caffeine.

But his daughter, 69-year-old Irene Johnson, disagrees with this theory. "I think it's just because he's an independent, stubborn man," she said.

The world's oldest person is a woman, 115-year-old Misao Okawa of Japan. According to Parade, it is rare for men to live over 110. Guinness notes that 90 percent of super-centenarians are women.

Salustiano was born on June 8, 1901, in a village in Salamanca, Spain. When he was 17, he and his older brother moved to Cuba in search of jobs, and worked in sugar cane fields.

In 1920, he immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island. He ended up working in coal mines in Lynch, Kentucky, before moving to his current home in the Niagara Falls area of New York. He worked in construction and in the industrial furnaces.

Salustiano married the "love of his life," Pearl, in 1934, Parade reports. After his wife died in 1988, Salustiano lived with his daughter in Grand Island, then moved to a nursing home in 2007.

Salustiano has a big family - in addition to his daughter, Irene, he has a 76-year-old son, John, as well as seven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.

Today, Salustiano keeps himself busy with hobbies like gardening, cross word puzzles, and games of gin rummy with friends.
