Beef Recall Due To E.Coli Contamination: 50,000 Pounds Of Ground Beef Recalled In Kansas, No Reported Cases Of Illness Yet

50,000 pounds of beef was voluntarily recalled by a Kansas company after some products tested positive for E.coli.

National Beef Packing Co. recalled their ground beef after a strain of the E.coli bacteria was found in one 10-pound sample, the company said Wednesday in a statement posted on its website. The meat was produced on July 18 and has a use by/freeze by date of August 7.

There have been no reported cases of illness, CNN reports.

"We are working closely with authorities to investigate this matter and are contacting our customers who have purchased this product," the company said.

The meat was "shipped in 40 to 60 pound cases to retailers, wholesalers and food service distributors nationwide," the USDA said in a news release.

The potentially deadly bacteria can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and kidney failure, Reuters reports. The very young, the elderly and people with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness, the USDA said.

It does not seem as though the industry is too concerned with the possible contamination.

"It's nothing. It's so small compared to what we produce and nobody was sickened," said K&S Financials analyst Jack Salzsieder.

"Packers are careful about what they do. Even if there was the slightest hint of a problem, they'd recall it," he said.

This is not the first time this year National Beef has had to recall its meat. In June, the company voluntarily recalled 23,000 pounds of ground beef after E.coli was found, New York Daily News reports.
