The Last Of Us Alternate Ending, And Naughty Dog Sexism Claims: Neil Druckmann Responds To Sexist Accusations

As The Last of Us by Naughty Dog continues to rock the sales charts, an alternate ending has been unveiled by director Neil Druckmann, as he responds to sexism claims.

Reportedly, Neil Druckmann originally pitched The Last of Us with Tess being the antagonist.

"That storyline never worked out," admitted Druckmann. "We had a tough time understanding why Joel would take this journey - we weren't buying it. We also had a hard time buying that Tess would go on a vendetta."

"Those things were solved by saying that Tess is going to die when she gets bitten, but her dying wish to Joel is to do this one good thing - help me do this one good thing so my soul can rest because I've done all these horrible things."

In addition, Druckmann revealed that the alternate ending for The Last of Us was much more hopeful.

"The [alternate] ending when we pitched the game was a much more hopeful ending, where Joel and Ellie make it to San Francisco and that is a town run by people who are trying to restore society," continued the Naughty Dog director.

"The camera pulls back and maybe everything is going to be alright for these two. I was working on writing, and it didn't feel honest any more. After everything they've done and everything they've been through, that was letting them off a little too easy, especially for Joel."

In addition, Neil Druckmann also commented on the criticism of The Last of Us as being sexist. Ellie, in particular was criticized as sometimes being too much of a damsel-in-distress and promoted sexism.

"We were surprised by some of the criticism of our use or execution of the female roles inside of the game," admitted The Last of Us game director Bruce Straley according to The Escapist.

"I think that there's a little bit of a sexism valley, for lack of a better term, like the uncanny valley. The more progress we make, the more those problems stand out," concluded Druckmann.
