Chiwetel Ejiofor Said No To Doctor Who: Would A Black Doctor Be Better Than Matt Smith Or Peter Capaldi?

With the recent diversity backlash over "Doctor Who" and its latest casting choice, Peter Capaldi, it appears a black Doctor could've happened during the Matt Smith era, had Chiwetel Ejiofor accepted the role.

The revelation came after Neil Gaiman, an occasional writer for "Doctor Who," revealed on his blog that a black actor was approached for the 11th Doctor.

"Would I like a person of color as the Doctor? Absolutely," said Gaiman.

"I have no doubt there will be. I know one black actor who was already offered the part of the Doctor, and who turned it down."

Reportedly, The Mirror had sources come forward and say it was "Love Actually" star Chiwetel Ejiofor who turned down the part, due to disagreement over contract terms.

Nevertheless, Gaiman was quick to emphasize that his part is entirely speculation, especially over the reasons behind casting Peter Capaldi as the latest Doctor.

"Do you think I have anything to do with casting Peter Capaldi, or with who gets the part or what happens in Doctor Who? I don't," confirmed Gaiman.

"I have no secret insider knowledge. I am not part of a mysterious casting cabal. I'm an author on a book tour. No, [the black actor] didn't turn down the role of the 12th Doctor. There have been many Doctors cast over the years."

So, it is unknown is a black actor, or indeed, Chiwetel Ejiofor, was approached this time around.

But certainly, the discussion over lack of diversity on "Doctor Who" continues, regardless of whether a black or female Doctor have been approached in the past.
