Nokia Amber Update: New Features Allows Lumia Owners To Blacklist Calls, Official Release Scheduled For August 2013

The Nokia Amber update, which will soon be rolled out by the Finnish tech giant, will allow users of Windows Phone 8 Lumia handsets to blacklist calls from certain numbers.

According to a report by ZDNet, people can scroll through their latest calls in the “phone” tile and long-tap on the entry, which will then offer the option to “block number.” Once the user confirms, the device will block calls and text messages from that number.

Owners of the Lumia 625, 925 and 1020 have the option to download the app update from the Windows Store.

According to Nokia, carriers will release the Amber in August, which seems to shares the same release period for Microsoft’s own updated called General Distribution Release 2 for the Windows Phone 8.

As soon as Lumia users get the Amber update, they can activate the blacklist features to block calls. An expected application of this new feature will be blocking sales calls from unknown numbers.

The blacklist feature can be managed via the “settings” tab of the phone, going to “call and SMS filter,” which displays the number of calls and messages that have been blocked and offers users a chance to remove numbers mistakenly added to the list. The filter can also be set to block certain calls during specific periods and has management features like activating a Live Tile and notifications.

ZDnet noted that the Nokia Amber update should help Nokia align the experience between already-released devices and newer Lumia Devices like the 625.

An example of this, ZDnet explained, is that the Nokia Pro Camera ships with the Lumia 1020. However, it will be available to the Lumia 920, 925 and 928 with the Amber, including the image processing software updates it flagged at the release of the Nokia Lumia 925.
