"The Vampire Diaries" season 5 is sure to bring a lot of surprises to viewers, and new reports say this will include a death and a romance when Elena and Caroline head to Whitmore College, before they even finish unpacking in their new dorm room. So who's dying and who's falling in love?

E! Online reports that Elena and Caroline, the two vampire college freshmen from Mystic Falls, will "experience the death of one of their fellow freshman when they hit college come October." 

But the death will lead one of the girls to "meet a possible new love interest."

This new love interest is the character Aaron, who is described as a "handsome co-ed who may have a connection to the dearly departed." Is he another supernatural character who can talk to the dead? Look out, Jeremy, you may have some competition when dealing with ghosts!

IB Times reports that Aaron sounds similar to a new character named Jesse that TV Line reported on in early July. 

Jesse, an upperclassman at Whitmore College, was described as a "hot, smart, confident and disarmingly sweet." Like Aaron, Jesse was said to be a potential love interest for someone - Caroline, IB Times reports. This makes sense, as executive producers of "Vampire Diaries" have previously said this season will feature Elena and Damon trying to make their romance work, despite their long-distance relationship, so this puts Elena off the market.

So has Jesse been renamed Aaron? All we know is that Jesse is going to be played by the "Greek" star and hottie Kendrick Sampson.

Either way, it sounds like Tyler and Klaus are going to be kicked to the curb by Jesse (or Aaron?). It's sure to be an exciting season for Caroline.

"The Vampire Diaries" returns to the CW for its fifth season on Thursday, Oct. 3.
