100- Vehicle Crash On Foggy Bridge In UK Ends With Zero Fatalities Due To Unnamed Man

A 100-vehicle crash in England yesterday would almost undoubtedly have ended with several fatalities, but an unnamed driver may have saved dozens of lives.

The 100-vehicle crash in Kent, England occurred as thick fog rolled in. Due to speed, carelessness, and poor visibllity, cars started piling up on Sheppey Bridge, which connects the Isle of Sheppey with the mainland part of Kent towards London.

The crashing cars kept coming...and coming...adding to the pileup. Witnesses said accident after accident continued for ten minutes.

Then one man, a truck driver, moved his vehicle to block more cars from coming into the melee; this likely saved many more people from being hurt or even killed in the wreckage.

"He was going the other way and ... he's gone down to the end of the carriageway, gone across the roundabout and actually blocked off the road so no more cars could actually enter the dual carriageway before the emergency services got there," witness Chris Buckingham said. "Whoever that guy is I'd like to shake his hand because he's probably saved lives."

Eight people were injured, but nobody was killed in the 100-car pileup. Some say that several of the first drivers were being careless and didn't have headlights on in the thick fog.

Another witness, Martin Stammers, said he considered himself lucky because he avoided a collision by slamming on his brakes.

"I was very, very, lucky. I was the last car out of it, if you like. As I came to the top of the hill, there were about five cars already smashed up, one was across my carriageway. I had to hit my brakes hard as well, I just had enough space to get through. From then on, all you could hear was the screeching of car tyres and the thudding, which was endless," he said.

Another witness reported that the scene was "mayhem".

"People were going quite fast - too fast. We were about 50 to 60 cars back. Luckily people coming on to the island were flashing their lights and waving their arms like mad. It's carnage, it really is. The fog was very, very thick. You could not see a vehicle in front of you as you came on to the bridge."

The bridge was closed to clear the wreckage, then reopened around 5 PM.
