‘Vampire Diaries’ Season 5 Spoilers: Damon Will Still Have His ‘Edge And Darkness’ Despite Being In Love With Elena

Don't expect Damon to go soft in "The Vampire Diaries" season 5 just because Elena is finally returning his love for her. New spoilers for season 5 reveal that Damon will still be the Damon we all know and love in "The Vampire Diaries."

According to Wet Paint, Give Me My Remote spoke with executive producer Caroline Dries about all the new spoiler developments in the relationship between Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev).

We already reported that Damon and Elena are going strong come "The Vampire Diaries" season 5 premiere, and are working on a happy, committed relationship despite Elena going away to start college at Whitmore.

"Damon and Elena are living the ultimate hometown hottie long-distance relationship," Julie Plec told Hollywood Crush. "Part of the fun of Damon and Elena will be seeing how they handle being separated, and once it's revealed to them that Stefan's not just out living his life, that he's actually in jeopardy, what will that do to both their relationship and also to Elena's commitment to college?"

But just because Damon is happy and in love, doesn't mean he's going to change his whole personality, according to Caroline Dries, Wet Paint reports.

She said the "Vampire Diaries" writers made sure to stay true to Damon's character in season 5: "I sat down to write a scene with [Ian], and it was like [makes a disgusted noise]. You don't want to do a cheesy version of that [relationship], so it's keeping the Damon edge and darkness, because that to me is what Elena signed on for," Dries said.

"So it's [we] make sure he still possesses all the Damon-isms and stuff, but he's just happy."

According to Dries, this includes Damon "getting a kick" out of Katherine's return to humanity and mortality, which she is not too happy about.
