J.R. Smith Suspended Five Games: Violated Anti-Drug Program, Won't Serve Suspension Until Return From Offseason Knee Surgery

J.R. Smith suspended five games for violating the terms of the league's anti-drug program, the NBA announced Friday.

The Knicks guard/forward will be suspended as soon as he suits up to play. J.R. Smith is recovering from off-season knee surgery. He might miss the beginning of the season anyway, so the five-game suspension will wait until he's ready to go.

The Knicks re-signed Smith in July to a three-year contract worth approximately $18 million, with a player option for the third year. J.R. will be suspended and a slight part of that pay will be deducted because of the suspension.

Smith won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award a season ago after coming off the bench in New York, averaging 18.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last season. He did stumble in the playoffs, which the Knicks were bounced from in the second round. Smith only hit 33% of his shots, though the team decided to sign him anyway during the offseason.

A statement released by the National Basketball Players Association said: "There is a collectively-bargained process in place, established by the NBA and the Players Association, and until that process has played itself out, it would be inappropriate for the PA or J.R. to make further statements about the matter. We all look forward to a resolution in due course."
