iPhone 5C Release Date: Plastic iPhone Pricing Critical To Apple, Says Analyst

For the first time in Apple's history, two iPhones will be announced and launched this year. There is no denying the fact that the iPhone 5S will definitely be one of the leaders in the industry.

Now, we look into the 'cheaper' sibling, iPhone 5C.

When it was confirmed a few weeks ago, a lot of people were expecting it to be very affordable for the Chinese market, which is currently Apple's target. However, in a report by BGR a week ago, it appears the plastic-covered phone will be priced just slightly lower than the 5S, possibly even matching the price range of the iPhone 5.

If this is the case, the iPhone 5C might just become a 'replacement' of the iPhone 5, while the 4S would serve as the company's midrange phone. In this kind of situation, the pricing of the 5C will be crucial to its, and the company's success as a whole.

According to Benedict Evans, a strategy consultant from Enders Analysis, striking a balance between sales volume and high margins would be difficult for Apple.

For instance, a $300 iPhone 5C will certainly become a hit in most parts of the world. However, it would also surely affect the overall profit of the company.

On the other hand, a $450 iPhone 5C would be able to deliver some good numbers as far as profit is concerned, but market share-wise, it would be dominated by Android-powered devices and iPhone rip-offs in China and other developing markets.

Whichever price range Apple chooses, it would certainly have an effect in the overall smartphone landscape. Let's see on Sept. 20.
