New ‘Diana’ Movie Bashed By Critics [Watch Trailer]; Gets Generally Negative Reviews!

The new 'Diana' movie is taking a beating from critics, the press, and even site commenters after the movie was premiered at Leicester Square on Sept. 5 (British local time).  The film centers on the late Princess Diana's final two years prior to her unfortunate accident, taking place after her divorce with Prince Charles, and moves around her affair with heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan.

The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw wrote, "Poor Princess Diana. I hesitate to use the term 'car crash cinema'. But the awful truth is that, 16 years after that terrible day in 1997, she has died another awful death. This is due to an excruciatingly well-intentioned, reverential and sentimental biopic about her troubled final years, laced with bizarre cardboard dialogue - a tabloid fantasy of how famous and important people speak in private."

Christopher Tookey of Daily Mail said, "This film is conclusive evidence that the bottom of the royal barrel has been scraped once too often. If you're in the mood for schlocky romance, it just about passes the time; but it never succeeds in being moving, or even involving. It's not even enjoyably bad."

"Naomi Watts - who looks utterly, completely and entirely nothing like the real thing - plays Diana who's reeling from her divorce with Prince Charles and is now fluttering her eyelashes in the direction of a new man," wrote Mirror's David Edwards.  "Despite a peroxide hair-job, she looks, sounds and acts nothing like the Princess of Wales. Wesley Snipes in a blonde wig would be more convincing."

Geoffrey McNab of The Independent, on the other hand, had less harsh words to say.  He wrote, "...Diana works well enough as a dark romantic drama and is far less exploitative than it might have been. Naomi Watts gives an intense and volatile performance as the princess. The problem, though, is that she doesn't really resemble the character she is playing, and the feature shifts wildly in tone."

The movie stars Naomi Watts as Princess Diana, and Naveen Andrews as Dr. Hasnat Khan.  Wikipedia puts the date of the US release as November 1.
