Microsoft Surface 2 Event: Sept. 23 Invite For Media Outlets As Surface 2, Surface Pro 2 Tablets Unveiled Even After Slow Sales For Its Originals

Microsoft Surface 2 event: On Sept. 23 in NYC, the second installment of the Surface will be unveiled for the world to see and media outlets have been personally invited to be there.

During the Sept. 23 event, Microsoft will unveil both the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2 tablets. The company confirmed to The Verge that it will not be launching a rumored Surface mini during this event.

The difference between the Surface model and the Surface Pro is the Surface utilizes an ARM CPU running Windows RT whereas the Surface Pro model utilizes an Intel Ivy Bridge CPU running Windows 8. The Surface was the first major initiative by Microsoft to integrate its Windows operating system with its own hardware.

A total of 1.5 million Surface devices had been sold since launch, with the Surface model only accounting for 400,000 of these sales. Microsoft projected 2 million Surface units to be sold by the end of the final quarter of 2012. Even without not living up to the company's planned expectations, the second installments are coming.

"Microsoft's next Surface tablet may debut with a white color variant. Paul Thurrott reports that he has "seen images of a white version of the device," where the front bezels of the device are still black. Microsoft has offered a range of colors for its Touch Cover accessories, but the company only ships a black model at the moment. Thurrott also claims the Surface 2, which will run on Windows RT 8.1 and drop the RT moniker, will also be powered by Nvidia's Tegra 4 and a 1080p display," read The Verge about rumored specs of the new tablets.

On November 14, 2012, Microsoft was sued for false advertising and unfair business practices due to the fact that about half of the total storage space on its 32 GB Surface RT tablet was used by the operating system, applications, and recovery data. Microsoft responded that the suit was without merit, because it had advertised the discrepancy on its website.
