‘Gravity’ With Sandra Bullock and George Clooney Gets Rave Reviews; Actress Says Movie About Rebirth And Letting Go

Gravity starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney had kept the audience at the edge of their seats during its screening at the Toronto International Film Festival - movie critics included.  So far, it has gained a 100 percent rating in Rotten Tomatoes, and those who watched had only praise for the film.

Richard Corliss of Time Magazine wrote, "If the film past is dead, Gravity shows us the glory of cinema's future. It thrills on so many levels. And because Cuar‪ón is a movie visionary of the highest order, you truly can't beat the view."

Todd McCarthy of Hollywood Reporter said, "At once the most realistic and beautifully choreographed film ever set in space, Gravity is a thrillingly realized survival story spiked with interludes of breath-catching tension and startling surprise."

The movie centers on Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock), a medical engineer out on her first space mission.  She is on a routine spacewalk when debris starts zooming toward her and their shuttle, leaving her and her companion, veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney), alone and adrift in space.

It must have been a real challenge for Bullock and Clooney who had to shoot in a mock zero-gravity environment, inside what was virtually a large box.  Ms. Congeniality said in a prior interview with the New York Times, "I was literally acting off of nothing for up to 10 hours a day, with headphones my only connection to Alfonso (Cuaron, the director)."

Recalling the experience of filming, the 49-year old actress said during the movie's press conference, and quoted by NY Daily News , "The process was so disjointed - we shot from the beginning of one line of dialogue to the beginning of another, and your hand started here and your head had to wind up here while your legs were being thrown up in the air."

As for the 52-year old actor, Canada.com quotes George Clooney as saying that simulating movement in space by moving really slowly while speaking quickly "is the trickiest thing you have ever done."

As for the film, Bullock says to New York Times, "It's about rebirth.  How do you let go in the worst possible situation so you can have some kind of release and peace?"

"Life is not going to stop coming at you," she added.  "In the end, you just have to say, 'I have no control.' Your time is precious. Are you really going to waste it worrying about this stuff?"

The movie will be shown in theaters on Oct. 4.
