Upcoming Smartphones 2014: Phonebloks Concept Lets You Change Your Phone's Hardware At Will, Allows You To Upgrade Piece By Piece

If you have owned a number of smartphones in the past, you may have already embraced the reality that any current or upcoming smartphone, regardless of build, quality and manufacturer, can not last longer than you prefer. With all the new handsets announced each year, even a year-old device can easily get outdated. But what if you can build up your phone and place the specific features you want to upgrade?

Developer Dave Hakkens introduced the Phonebloks concept.

In this ambitious but pretty cool idea, the phone will be built into a main part aptly called the 'base', where different features such as Wi-Fi connectivity, processors, cameras, battery, storage, etc. would all be connected with the use of two small screws. What makes it interesting is that these parts can be replaced by the user by 'shopping' on what Hakkens refer to as the Blokstore where hardware parts are available.

Once the user gets the particular part he ordered, he just simply unscrews the phone, takes off the specific feature, and then placed the new one. Tadaa. You now have an upgraded phone.

According to BGR, Hakkens did not go to crowdfunding platforms such as Kickstarrter because it needs constant support from suppliers and partners rather than just loads of cash. Otherwise, the Blokstore, which he refers to as an 'app store for hardware' would become empty, or have limited options for Phoneblok owners.

As a result, Hakkens turned to Thunderclap and on October 31st, the site will conduct a social media shoutout to encourage its users and even partner companies to support what would become the future of smartphone development.

Here is a video of how the Phonebloks work:

We'll stay tuned to get the latest updates on this incredibly interesting concept.
