Mayweather, Pacquiao Match Still Possible Despite ‘Money’ Win; Fight Will Save Boxing

While Manny Pacquiao has slipped and Floyd Mayweather has went on a rampage, "Pacman vs Money" is still what fans want. Boxing in general has slid, and a fight of this proportion may be its saving grace.

The Fight everybody wanted to see seemed to have slipped into oblivion when both corners have hurled both demands and accusations at each other. There were issues about purse share, pay-per-view share, who decides the venue, drug testing and every other issue imaginable. The fight never happened, and as the fighters neared their retirement, there was a possibility that the fight would never happen.

The fighters were still in the same weight class and fought the same opponents-but never each other.

Pacquiao had two successive losses, one by an embarrassing knockout to arch-nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez. Amid drug accusations, Marquez escaped with the victory and conveniently denied Pacquiao of a rematch.

Mayweather continued to display his excellence, and Alvarez was seen as a worthy opponent, as he was young and undefeated. Money dispatched him with a majority decision.

Fans still want to see Mayweather vs Pacquiao, despite their separate paths. Mayweather has the leverage and he will use it. In an interview with Yahoo Sports: "Everybody's like, 'Aw, Pacquiao,' but I'm just letting you know he's not getting a fight with me," Mayweather said. "The only way he's getting the fight with me is if he signs with Mayweather Promotions. He's got to give me fights with Mayweather Promotions. If he don't give me no fights under Mayweather Promotions, then he's not getting the fight. That's how it is working now, because the ball is in my court. The ball has been in my court. I have been the A side."

It's a very longshot, but when money talks, everyone listens. For the sake of the sport of boxing itself, which has been kicked around by the rising MMA interest, let's hope they do.
