Cable vs Broadcast Television – Which Network has Better Programs?

Cable channels go head to head with broadcast television as they release programs during primetime. But which network is better?

On October 21, cable channel tvN's new drama "Basketball" will air its pilot episode at 10:00 PM. In the past, tvN has aired shows such as "I Need Romance 2012," "Nine," and "Who Are You" at 11:00 PM, unlike broadcast television dramas, which usually air at 10:00 PM. But now, it seems as if cable channel will be battling it out for viewership with "Basketball" against broadcast television shows such as MBC's "Qi Empress," SBS' "Suspicious Housekeeper," and KBS 2TV's "Marry Him If You Dare."

Not only that, tvN's "Comedy Big League" will change its airtime on from 9:00 PM Saturday to 11:00 PM Sunday starting on the 29th. It also seems like the cable channels are challenging the broadcast channel shows such as KBS 2TV's "Gag Concert" which airs Sundays at 9:15 PM and MBC's "Fall in Comedy" which airs at 12:50 AM Sunday nights. One broadcasting rep said, "Viewership will definitely be compared between the two networks, as well as the ability to make the audience laugh. Although they are not airing simultaneously, 'Comedy Big League' comedians are preparing to go up against broadcast television shows."

In addition, tvN's new sitcom "Potato Star 2013QR3" will air its pilot episode on September 23 during "primetime," which is at 9:15 PM. It will be dishing it out against broadcast channel programs such as KBS 1TV's "News at 9," MBC's "Emperor's Daughter Soo Baek Hyang" (tentative title and translation) to follow "Gu Am Heo Jun," SBS' "Life Master," "Scene 21", KBS 2TV's "1 vs 100," and "Vitamin."

A CJ E&M rep commented on cable channel's aggressive move and said, "The cable channels have reviewed viewership data and chosen programs that fit the viewers' tastes. It seems as if they've gained confidence in their viewership, and have changed plans accordingly."
