Apple iPhone Map Directs Users To Drive Across Airport Runway

A flaw in an Apple iPhone map sent users to drive across a busy airport runway.

The faulty iPhone map had several motorists a week driving across a runway at Fairbanks International Airport, thanks to faulty directions on the app.

Angie Spear, the airport's marketing director, blamed the incidents on drivers' over-relying on their iPhones. r "No matter what the signs say, the map on their iPhone told them to proceed this way," Spear said.

In both cases, drivers from out of town had followed precise turn-by-turn instructions that-- instead of guiding them to the airport's parking garage-- sent them trundling along the access route that is utilized by pilots. The instructions concluded by telling drivers to "Turn Right onto Taxiway B".

Whoops.

The airport had to close an aircraft access route because of the faulty map.

The  Fairbanks International Airport told a local newspaper that in the past three weeks two separate incidents had involved motorists driving onto the runway.

The airport said told press that it complained to Apple via the local attorney general's office.

Since then, barricades have been erected to block access that will not be removed until Apple updated its directions.

"We asked them to disable the map for Fairbanks until they could correct it, thinking it would be better to have nothing show up than to take the chance that one more person would do this," Melissa Osborn, chief of operations at the airport told the Alaska Dispatch newspaper.

The Google maps app, unsurprisingly, directs users to a different route-one that actually works.

In the September 6 and September 20 incidents, the drivers involved had each been from out of town. They ignored signposts warning them that they should not be driving along the taxiway, simply following the maps on their phone.

Although there were 737 jets that use the runway, no one was hurt.

The airport was told the problem would be fixed soon. A spokesman for Apple was unable to provide comment.

What do you think of this? Do you think it's sadly typical that the Apple map is terrible but the Google one works? Sound off in the comments below!
