iPad Mini 2 Release Date: 4 Rumors Surrounding Apple's Well-Loved 2nd Generation Slate

One of the most anticipated tablet releases this year is Apple's second generation iPad mini. The original slate was so popular that it outsold the company's iPad 4. Now, the Cupertino company may want to follow up the slate's success with the iPad mini 2.

With all the rumors making the rounds on the Internet, here are four which we know so far:

1. It will come with Retina display

Most consumers, analysts and bloggers would agree that the only downside of the first-generation iPad mini is the lack of Retina display. However, even the 'generic' display Apple placed on it still delivered high quality graphics and performance. Now it seems Apple is going to build the ultimate tablet amidst rumors that the iPad mini 2 will have a retina screen.

2. It will have Touch ID

A week ago, we reported that the upcoming iPad's front panel is a perfect fit for a Touch ID home button. In addition, the iPad mini 2's front panel is also identical to that of the iPad, leading most analysts to believe that both slates will have the famed fingerprint sensor of the iPhone 5s.

3. It will retain its unique design

Based on some rumored leaked images of the iPhone mini 2 case, it appears that it will don the same design and build. On the other hand, it is the new iPad 5 that will copy the design of the original iPad mini to appeal to more consumers.

4. It will be announced this year, but may become available next year

Apple is rumored to be holding an event later this month to unveil its new generation iPad 5, and the iPad mini 2. However, recent reports from industry watchers state that production for the Retina mini is still under way. This could mean that the slate may have very limited supply come holiday season. In that case, it may hit the shelves as early as December, but it could be moved to as late as Spring next year.
