Girls' Generation and Super Junior: Crowned as Top Album Sales in 2011

Girls’ Generation’s 3rd album ‘The Boys’ was totaled to be the best-selling album. Also Super Junior was named as most sold albums in the same period.

According to the ‘Gaon Chart’ managed by Music Industry Association of Korea the album ‘The Boys’ topped album sales.

‘The Boys’ released on October 19 of last year is the first album of Girls Generation geared for international release. The album gained expectations as it was written by Teddy Riley who has worked with artists such as Michael Jackson, Bobby Brown and Usher.

Girls’ Generation lead single ‘The Boys’ topped Gaon Weekly Album Chart for two consecutive months. Thanks to that SNSD won Artist of the Year and Best Female Group Mnet Asian Music Award, won Global Artist Award at Melon Music Award and others.

Especially ‘The Boys’ album sold 293,042 units until last November placed behind Super Junior’s fifth studio album ‘Mr. Simple’ that sold 339,707 units. However entering December 92,306 extra units were sold overturning the rank. ‘The Boys’ cumulative sale till December in Gaon homepage chart section is 385,348 units.

Super junior’s ‘Mr. Simple’ release last August placed second. The annual cumulative is 343,348 units. Also the ‘Mr. Simple Repackage’ released in September sold 129,894 units. Combining both album brings the total to be 473,242 units.

Especially ‘Mr. Simple Repackage’ album sales ranked number 7. Super Junior is the only artist that has two albums placed in top 10 of Gaon Chart annual album sales chart.

Coming in at third was TVXQ’s ‘Why (Keep Your Head Down)’ with SM Entertainment singers sweeping -3 place. JYJ’s ‘Heaven’ and BEAST ‘Fiction&Fact’ following in at 4-5. Big Bang’s G-Dragon and Daesung still showed potential by placing sixth despite their bad news.
