Doc Rivers Wants To Cover The Lakers’ Championship Banners During Their Home Games!

The Staples Center has become a very important landmark in Los Angeles. It is home to three professional teams. It's an interesting situation to say the least.

The Los Angeles Clippers will cover the Lakers' championship banners during their home games. Apparently, the ghosts of Lakers greatness weigh too heavily on Rivers' shoulders. Rivers fought many an epic battle with the Lakers when he was coach of the arch rival Boston Celtics. One of those banners came at their expense.

The Lakers' history roundup (from LA Times): "The Lakers have 12 championship banners - Minneapolis has its five titles on one banner - and 10 retired jerseys, including Chick Hearn's microphone retired jersey."

Rivers had the banners of Jamal Crawford, Blake Griffin, J.J. Redick, DeAndre Jordan, Jared Dudley, Chris Paul and Matt Barnes all put up on the wall.

The NHL's Los Angeles Kings, who also play at Staples, were untouched, though. The Kings' championship banner was still up on the opposite side of the arena.

Rivers was asked why he didn't put up his banners on the same side as the Kings' banner.

"Well, I didn't look at it as the banner thing, I just look at it as putting our guys up. Listen, I think this is our arena when we play. So I just thought it would be good that we show our guys. No disrespect to them. But when we play, it's the Clippers' arena as far as I know."

Clippers center De Andre Jordan, who has played with the Clippers for five seasons, had always wondered why the Lakers' banners are there when they're playing. He sounds off: "You've got to give those [Lakers] guys credit. They won championships so they have the right to put them up. But at the same time, it doesn't say Lakers Arena outside. It says Staples."

This is the best time to say  "Whatever, dude." Until the Clippers get their own banners, the move reeks green. Not Celtic green, but green with envy.
