‘Lion King’ Reaches $1Billion! Becomes First Ever Broadway Musical To Break The Mark! More Movie Based Musicals To Come

"The Lion King" is one of the last few Disney movies that have become certified blockbusters. Most of Disney's last hits were under the Pixar banner.

"The Lion King" is one of the highest grossing animated movies of all time. It used to rank number 1 but was toppled by 2010's "Toy Story 3" by Pixar, now under the Disney banner.

Now it has a title that it can claim to be it's own. Disney decided to produce a Broadway Musical based on the movie. It had a successful run.

The Disney musical that kicked off Broadway's obsession with movies is on pace to become this month the first show to reach $1 billion in cumulative gross. It had collected more than $997 million from its New York shows as of Oct. 6, almost exactly 16 years after its first preview performance on Oct. 15, 1997.

Lion King's success is not to be attributed to its longevity -- it will soon overtake "Les Miserables" as only the fifth-longest-running show of all time. The Lion King also does not have inflated ticket prices. Even with the adoption of premium seating a decade ago, Lion King pricing remains middle-of-the-pack, averaging $130 per seat with a peak price of $199, compared with $171 and $477 for "The Book of Mormon."

The distinction of The Lion King musical is that it is the most consistent. The Lion King plays to a full packed or even standing room audience almost every playdate. It is only on very rare instances that they play to less than 80% capacity.

Producer and Disney Theatrical Group president Thomas Schumacher remarks: "This humbling milestone is a testament to the vision and artistry of [director] Julie Taymor." He is referring to their director, who has won a Tony award for the production.

Meanwhile, several movies have been rumored to be converted into Broadway musicals following The Lion King's success. "Toy Story" and "Up" from Pixar are candidates.  Others are "Mean Girls" and "Drop Dead Gorgeous."
