Beetle Juice Sequel Movie In Works: Tim Burton Signs On, Michael Keaton Rumored To Make Return 25 Years Later Of The 1988 Classic

Beetle Juice sequel is reportedly in the works as "multiple individuals familiar with the project" told The Wrap that the director has signed on the dotted line for "Beetlejuice 2" and will soon start work on the sequel of the 1988 original flick.

Rumors are already swirling that the man who played Beetle Juice, Michael Keaton, will star again as the same role with Director Tim Burton giving this sequel a try over 25 years later.

"The Geffen Company, which produced the 1988 classic, will produce the sequel with Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg of KatzSmith Productions," the movie publication said in a statement about Beetle Juice 2.

A script has reportedly been finished, though no filming dates have been established.

"Grahame-Smith, who penned the Burton-produced adaptation of 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,' wrote the script that Warner Bros. has confidence in the movie," The Wrap said.

One year after the release of the film, a cartoon T.V. series spawned for four seasons for 94 episodes.

"The timing feels right for a return to Beetlejuice's graveyard, as the character remains a beloved part of pop culture who maintains a presence at theme parks around the world. The character also spawned a successful animated TV series," The Wrap says.

The film with the $15 million budget, grossed $73,707,461 at the box office in 1988.

This sequel almost took place in 1990 with a completely offbeat storyline.  Burton hired Jonathan Gems to write a sequel titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian.

"Tim thought it would be funny to match the surfing backdrop of a beach movie with some sort of German Expressionism, because they're totally wrong together", Gems said. The story followed the Deetz family moving to Hawaii, where Charles is developing a resort. They soon discover that his company is building on the burial ground of an ancient Hawaiian Kahuna. The spirit comes back from the afterlife to cause trouble, and Beetlejuice becomes a hero by winning a surf contest with magic. Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder agreed to do the film, on the condition that Burton directed, but he became distracted with Batman Returns. The film never happened.
