‘Ender’s Game’ Movie Is ‘Relevant’ Despite Written 30 Years Ago, Asa Butterfield Says; Predicted The Internet, Drone Warfare, Blogging

"Ender's Game" movie premieres on Friday, Nov.1, and Asa Butterfield explained why "Ender's Game" is a movie that is very relevant to today, despite the fact that the original book was written almost 30 years ago.

Orson Scott Card published "Ender's Game" in 1985. The book and movie explore a future dystopian Earth where children are manipulated into fighting an enemy race, Reuters reports.

"Ender's Game" follows the journey of a young boy named Ender Wiggin, played by Asa Butterfield, who is put through advanced warfare training due to his superior intellect.

Butterfield, the 16-year-old British actor famous for playing the lead in Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" in 2011, said "Ender's Game" was "scarily accurate" in how it predicted present day issues, despite being written three decades ago, Reuters reports.

"The amount of the stuff in the story written is so relevant today, for example, the Internet and drone warfare and blogging, it was predicted in the story 30 years ago, and now it's happened," Butterfield said.

Ender was "definitely one of the more complicated characters I've had to play," Butterfield added.

"The amount of depth and intensity that he experiences is really interesting for an actor, it's always exciting to have a role which both pushes you in your acting ability," he said.

Harrison Ford will play Colonel Graff in the movie.

"It's about young people being asked to accept huge responsibilities, being trained for warfare because it's proposed that they have this capacity to absorb information more quickly than older people," Ford told Reuters.

The film also stars Viola Davis, Ben Kingsley and Hailee Steinfeld, according to Reuters.

Alan Gould, a Wall Street analyst who follows Lions Gate for Evercore Partners, currently projects "Ender's Game" will make a total of $70 - $80 million in the United States and Canada, Reuters reports.
