NBA Draft 2014 – Andrew Wiggins Tops Draft Board Again! ‘Maple Jordan’ Will Become Undisputed Number One Draft Pick?

Some teams in the NBA are taking the strategy of 'bottoming out' to get the best chance to draft Andrew Wiggins. Actually, they want to be the first to pick, but since every draft board/mock draft has placed him at the top, "Maple Jordan" is the prize that makes tanking a worthy endeavor.

This strategy is not unprecedented. The Boston Celtics and a host of other teams did it in 1997 in anticipation for Tim Duncan. They didn't succeed though, and San Antonio became the model of consistent success. The Cleveland Cavaliers all but listed their players injured to have a shot at Lebron James, a player on the radar since his freshman high school year. They succeeded, and they did get Lebron, but we know how that story ended.

There were minor instances in 2007 (the Oden-Durant debate) and even last year for Anthony Davis. However, this year's situation is truly unprecedented. While no team will directly admit to tanking or state their goal as losing, such terms as 'long term planning' and 'rebuilding' are just diplomatic ways to state the obvious.

He may not be the only reason, and that is why there are at least five teams tanking (Sixers, Magic, Jazz, Celtics and Suns), but Andrew Wiggins is a worthy franchise player. He has been called "Maple Jordan" because he's from Canada (the Maple Leaf reference) and Jordan because of Michael Jordan. The comparison is set this early.

Andrew Wiggins is number one on Draft Express 2014 mock draft and the first two versions (1.0 and 1.1) of ESPN draft expert Chad Ford.

The main scouting report for Andrew Wiggins shows that he won't be able to equal the dominance of Lebron James right out of high school.  He is an athletic specimen with all the physical tools, but he  doesn't have the tendency to dominate like King James. However, this is something he can develop, and his unselfish style may be more beneficial in his first year in the pros.
