After Rihanna made headlines for rocking the "ready for bed" doobie hairstyle as she accepted the first-ever IDOL Award at the 2013 American Music Awards, the singer's hairstylist Ursula Stephen is speaking out.

Rihanna's dobbie or wrap hairstyle has been the subject of controversy due to the fact that the do is normally used to maintain straight hairstyles and is commonly only worn in the house or the salon.

Stephen is usually responsible for Rihanna's trendsetting hairstyles. Thus, Jessica C. Andrews of Elle online had to ask the celebrity hairstylist if she was the one to blame for the "Diamonds" singer's red carpet doobie last Sunday.

Despite what the public may believe, RiRi was the one to blame.

"It was actually Rihanna's idea. She had her mind made up! Honestly, I was a little hesitant but I knew she could pull it off, so I was all for it," admitted Stephen.

Although Rihanna shocked America by wearing the doobie in public, Stephen insisted that this rebellious act is nothing new.

"It's already been done," said Stephen. "I see girls on the street rocking them all the time shopping, eating, etc. It's just never been seen in a formal setting."

While some may think RiRi was making a mockery of her AMAs honor with the wrap do, Stephen suggests she was breaking barriers.

"It was a nod to fashion! This is a style that can be worn by some of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood," she said.

Furthermore, Stephen implied Rihanna's doobie that was embellished by diamond hairpins was a tribute to the Jazz Era.

"Yes, the '30s were all about [the wrap]! The pins helped to elevate the look from just your average doobie," said Stephen.
