Los Angeles Lakers Forced To Play 3-on-3 In Practice With More Players Being Out; Mike Kupchack Wants Nick To Stay As Laker For A Long Time

The struggling Los Angeles Lakers can't field in quality players during official games. Worst, they can't get enough men to practice.

In an interview with the NBC Los Angeles, guard Nick Young said that the team, currently at 13th place in the Western Conference with a 14-23 win-loss record, didn't have enough players on their Sunday practice, forcing them to cut short the training. He added that they were forced to play 3-on-3 due to the lack of healthy guys. The disappointing season of the NBA's most popular team during the last decade continues. So far, they've lost at least seven guys due to injury and they are playing with guys from D-League or reserves. Among those who are still injured are Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Steve Blake, Jordan Farmar, Pau Gasol, and Xavier Henry. The purple and gold team is so bad, Young thinks it sucks to be a Laker fan.

"It's hard to be a Lakers fan, especially to see a game like the last one we played. It's tough, Young tol the Los Angeles Times before practice Monday. "We're still the Lakers. We'll still go out and fight each night and try to turn things around.''

Swaggy P has been one of the few bright spots for the Lakers. He currently leads the team in points with 16.1. He is doing that in just $1.1 million, an amount that is deemed unfair for player having such average. Young signed a two-year contract with the team and for what he has done for the franchise, looks like he will get rewards from General Manager Mike Kupchak.

Lakers.com's Mike Trudell reported that Kupchak wants the 28-year old to stay in Hollywood in the longest time possible. In an interview, Trudell asked Kupchak about the future of its players, particularly those who are playing well.

MT: Mike D'Antoni has raved about Nick Young's play this season, and his teammates love him. Has he exceeded your expectations, and how might his play impact the market for him since he has a player option for next season?

Kupchak: He's been great. Where it ends up remains to be seen. But I would credit his agent (Mark Bartelstein). I'm almost positive Nick had more lucrative offers. But what the agent did was look around the league for the spot he thought the kid could have a good year. Playing time, style of play, etc. ... sometimes it can be a negative going back to your hometown, but he'd been through that with the Clippers. The agent, whom I spoke to for a long time about this, had to get to that place. Nick wanted to be here, and understandably, players and agents need to look at the dollars. There were more lucrative offers, but our roster provided ample playing time and the style of play fit, and Nick and his family bought into it. Going forward, there are a number of things to determine. Who knows. Money is important to Nick as to all players, but you can watch him play and he just loves to play. Some guys treat it as a job, but Nick loves to play. He has fun and basketball is a big part of who it is. Whatever he decides to do with his opt out ... we'd certainly like to see him be a Laker for a long time.
