The Nets used a 27-14 third-quarter scoring advantage to pull away and win their sixth straight at home and second game in two nights after going 1-6 in their first seven contests that closed a back-to-back, according to ESPN.com.
"We're not only winning, but we're pretty convincingly turning it on in the third quarter with the defense, the way we're moving the ball," Pierce said. "That's what we want. That's all (coach Jason Kidd) wants out of us, night in, night out, a consistent effort. That's what we're trying to do, especially in back-to-backs."
Brooklyn has pulled to 2 1/2 games back of first place in the Atlantic Division from that is led by the Toronto Raptors. Meanwhile, Dallas hopes to rebound from a 12-point loss to the Raptors on Wednesday.
The Mavericks led by 21 after the first quarter, but found a way to lose the game.
"Very frustrating," Vince Carter, who had eight points against his former team, told ESPN.com. "This is a game we should have won, regardless of whether Dirk was on the floor or not."
Nowitzki was given the night off, but will be in the lineup Friday night after the team played 11 times in 18 days.
"It was just the right thing to do, the right thing for him, for the organization," coach Rick Carlisle said. "He needed a day to rest."
