But the Samsung Galaxy S2 is reported to have reached end-of-run status, which means it won’t be receiving anymore updates from the South Korean tech giant. But thanks to the developer community, the 2011 flagship can have an Android 4.4.2 Custom ROM, which is what is shown in this YouTube video.

A YouTube video shows the Samsung Galaxy S2, the former flagship by the South Korean tech giant, running a new firmware by CyanFox. The software is a light-weight Android 4.4.2 custom ROM. It’s based on AOSP/Android (4.4.2) and CyanogenMod (11) source bases.

On XDA-Developers.com, it noted that CyanFox is a free, community built distribution of Android 4.4.2 KitKat. The forum said that the software “greatly extends the capabilities of your phone and to increase performance and reliability of stock Android for your device.

The more than 12-minute video on YouTube showed a working Samsung Galaxy S2, Model. No. i9100 running on the said OS via the CyanogenMod update.

In a report by the International Business Times, it noted that some of the benefits of the new software include the ability to personalize themes, icons and wallpapers. The user can also gain control over the processor and the new OS allows installation of mods and CyanogenMod add-ons. Last but not the least, with the firmware, you Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus unit runs on the latest Android version.

The CyanFox update meets a demand amongst S2 users who may otherwise be left out of the updates, since it looks like the Samsung Galaxy S2 will not be getting an update like the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The probability of the S2 not getting an update can be found on Google’s comment about the Nexus getting Android 4.4.

“Galaxy Nexus, which first launched two years ago, falls outside of the 18-month update window when Google and others traditionally update devices,” Google said in its support site.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 was released May 2011 and currently runs on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. It was succeeded by the Samsung Galaxy S3 in May 2012 and a refreshed version of the popular unit came in January 2013, called the Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus.
