NBA 2014 Free Agents - Carmelo Anthony On Chicago Bulls' Radar? After Record Performance, Knicks Star Is Top Free Agent This Summer

Carmelo Anthony will draw some attention as a top NBA 2014 Free Agent. He just scored 62 points, breaking a record Kobe Bryant once held.

The 62 points he scored was the highest ever in Madison Square Garden. It is the highest point total in the league for this season (sorry, Kevin Durant). It is also the highest point total in Knicks franchise history (details from Yahoo NBA).

Melo will can exercise his player option and become an unrestricted free agent. With that, he can sign with any team, like the Lakers, Mavericks, Bulls or even the Knicks. At the end of 2013, with a dismal losing streak, everybody was busy predicting Carmelo's new address.

From Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports: "Only now, the gloom of the Knicks' season - the uncertainty of the franchise's future - left that man to believe it's possible Anthony could leave New York in free agency. 'Chicago is much more in play for him than L.A.,' the source said."

The Chicago Bulls were not even considered as they did not have the salary cap flexibility to sign Carmelo outright. They still need to amnesty Carlos Boozer, something the Bulls owner would not do for the past two seasons. They just traded their 10 year veteran small forward Luol Deng because he did not accept a $10 million/year extension. They will spend twice that much on Anthony if they offer him the maximum.

Are the Bulls really interested? Chicago Bulls' head coach Tom Thibodeau is unfazed. From the Chicago Sun Times, his initial response when asked about this rumor: "They've gotten used to you guys."

He follows: ''It's really the challenge of the league. When you lay out your plan at the beginning of the season, you talk about all the things that crop up during a season. There are always injuries, trades, things going your way, things not going your way, the schedule, early games, late games, back-to-back games. There's all that stuff.

It's very easy to get distracted. If you want to look for an excuse to get distracted, you can find one every day. The important thing is to build the right habits, so you can be ready to play each night. I think the good teams do that. That's the challenge for every team.''

That's the right mentality for players and coaches. Let the GM and the owner worry about player movements and salary caps. Thibodeau will coach and Anthony will score buckets for different teams..for now.
