Oscar Nomination Revoked for `Alone Yet Not Alone’ Song; Songwriter `Devastated’; Not the First Time A Nomination Has Been Pulled.

The Oscar nomination was revoked for "Alone yet not alone" after the songwriter emailed about it. The board found that to be an unfair advantage.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences revoked the best original song category Oscar nomination for "Alone Yet Not Alone," because the songwriter emailed voters about submitting the song for consideration, breaking Oscar rules.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences cited direct campaigning that created "the appearance of an unfair advantage" for pulling the Oscar nomination. The song "Alone Yet Not Alone" is from a faith-based movie with the same title. "Alone Yet Not Alone" was nominated for original song.

The Academy of Motion Pictures' board of governors voted it out on Tuesday night following revelations that songwriter Bruce Broughton, e-mailed Academy members during the voting period.

Cheryl Boone Isaacs, president of the Academy said "No matter how well-intentioned the communication, using one's position as a former governor and current executive committee member to personally promote one's own Oscar submission creates the appearance of an unfair advantage."

In a statement Broughton said "I indulged in the simplest grass roots campaign and it went against me when the song started getting attention. I got taken down by competition that had months of promotion and advertising behind them. I simply asked people to find the song and consider it."

The lyrics to "Alone Yet Not Alone" were written by Dennis Spiegel.

"Alone Yet Not Alone" is an independent movie about 18th-century colonists that is only showing in 11 theaters. The film has only made about $100,000. "Alone Yet Not Alone" will get a larger release in June.

The Academy said No other song will be nominated in its place. Pharrell Williams' "Happy" from "Despicable Me 2," "Let It Go" from Disney film "Frozen," "The Moon Song" from "Her," and "Ordinary Love" from "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" are all still in the running.

This is not the first time the Academy has revoked a nomination. "A Place in the World" lost its Oscar nomination for best foreign-language film in 1992 because the film was produced in Argentina and was designated as having been produced in Uruguay.
