‘Batman Vs Superman’ Cast Rumors: Jesse Eisenberg As Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons As Alfred! ‘The Social Network’ Star Gets Mixed Reactions

Lex Luthor of big screen has been chosen. Jesse Eisenberg, formerly of "The Social Network" fame has reportedly been chosen to play Superman's nemesis in "Batman Vs Superman." Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons will also play Alfred, Batman's butler and confidante.

The announcement was made by Greg Silverman who serves as President of  Creative Development and Worldwide Production and Sue Kroll, President of Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, for Warner Bros. Pictures.

Zach Snyder gave some comments on the announcement (transcription from mtv.com):

About Luthor: "Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman's rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What's great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He's a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions."

About Alfred (actually a role more important than most people think): "As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne's most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure. He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne."

The other candidates that were rumored for the Lex Luthor role were Joaquin Phoenix and Bryan Cranston of "Breaking Bad." Even Denzel Washington was mentioned. For the most part of the rumor chase, Jesse Eisenberg was a shocker. However, he has his share of 'evil' geniuses before, and Eisenberg is the youngest Luthor to appear on film ("Smallville" does not qualify).

Some reactions were instantly negative: mtv.com mentioned he was "hipster Luthor" and "Michael Cera." Variety points out that Eisenberg has played a young billionaire before. Snyder did not want the same formula for his film's Luthor, and perhaps Eisenberg is a good choice for his vision: Younger and not outright evil at the onset.
