Toronto lost eight straight to end March. After winning two in a row to begin April, losses to the Winnipeg Jets and Lightning combined with a two-game win streak by the Columbus Blue Jackets ended its chances, according to NHL.com.

"We went through the eight-game stretch where we just couldn't seem to get a win and we couldn't grab traction at a very critical time," captain Dion Phaneuf said in the Toronto Star. "That's where things went wrong for our team. Up to that point we'd played some real good hockey, pretty consistent for the most part. When we hit that stretch, that's ultimately what cost us."

These final two games will be to finish what has been a disappointing ending to what was a good season most of the year.

"Not in shock," coach Randy Carlyle said. "I guess the words to describe it would be extremely disappointed, shallow, embarrassed. All those things. I think we have more than what we were able to accomplish, and that's the most troubling issue here. We just didn't find a way to compete to a level that was necessary."

The offense hasn't showed up in much of the gaems as the Leafs dropped five straight road games in regulation, getting held to eight goals.

"I actually didn't say anything (to the team) after because I was real disappointed, obviously, knowing that Columbus had won in overtime," Carlyle said. "They knew that after the game as well as I did, so it was a moot point going in and saying anything at this point."
