NBA Draft 2014: MItch McGary Joins NBA Draft Despite Failing Drug Test! Former Michigan Wolverine's Draft Stock Dropping!

Mitch McGary of the Michigan Wolverines has decided to join the 2014 NBA Draft. He surprised most observers when he opted to stay in school last year. Now, he feels like it's his last chance.

However, there was some controversy when he failed an NCAA sanctioned drug test in March. The recommended penalty for that offense is a one year suspension. Expectedly, he decided to join the draft than get suspended.

McGary talked with Yahoo: "If it had been a Michigan test, I would've been suspended three games and possibly thought about coming back. I don't have the greatest circumstances to leave right now [due to the injury]. I feel I'm ready, but this pushed it overboard. I don't think the penalty fits the crime. I think one year is overdoing it a little bit."

His season stats this year are actually lower than last year's. He  averaged 7.8 points and 6.6 rebounds which are not really impressive for a projected first rounder.

Nevertheless, the decision is final. His official statement from M Live: "My family and I want to thank everyone for giving us privacy and the time to make this decision. As you know, it was important for us to weigh all the factors that go into something like this. With that being said, I am ready to move on to the next stage in my life and enter the NBA Draft.

"Being a part of a program that values integrity, it is important to let everyone know of a poor decision I recently made. I tested positive for marijuana during the NCAA Tournament. We were notified of that result after the Final Four. I regret thoroughly disappointing my family, coaches and administration. Despite all of this they have been understanding and helpful over the last couple of weeks.

"I take full responsibility for this poor choice and want to apologize to everyone, especially those I have grown close to during my fabulous two years at the University of Michigan.

"I love the University of Michigan and all it has allowed me to do. I have had my ups and downs, especially with my injury this season. I want to thank all the fans for embracing me. This has been the best two years of my life and I have some unbelievable memories. I know that I will be a Wolverine forever. Go Blue."

McGary's stock has dropped from late lottery to late first round. If his team workouts turn out well, he could still improve.
