The Hobbit Final Movie Faces Box Office Challenge; Can Peter Jackson’s ‘Battle Of Five Armies’ Break Records?

"The Hobbit" final movie is facing a box-office challenge as the first two parts of the trilogy did very well in both domestic and global ticket sales. So the next question is, can Peter Jackson break his own records for "The Battle of Five Armies?"

According to the-numbers.com, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" pulled in $303,003,568 in domestic receipts and additional $711,700,000 for the international box office.

Meanwhile, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" recorded $258,366,855 in the domestic box office and another $694,700,000 in international box office for a total of $953,066,855, which is less than the $1,014,703,568 earned by the first movie, boxofficemojo.com said.

Peter Jackson then has his work cut out for him for "The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies" when the first two films pulled in just under $2 billion at the box office and the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy released between 2001 and 2003 recorded a total of $2.89 billion, The Guardian said.

However, Peter Jackson has a good history with last films since "The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" the concluding film in the trilogy proved to be the biggest money maker after pulling in $1,141,408,667 at the worldwide box office.

"The Hobbit" final movie director earlier posted in his Facebook page that the third film will go by the title "The Battle of the Five Armies."

The director explained that the title "The Hobbit: There and Back Again" is more appropriate for the second film when Bilbo arrived at Erebor. But with the third film, the title seems "misplaced."

"After all, Bilbo already arrived 'there' in the 'Desolation of Smaug,'" he wrote.

So last year, during the promotional tour of the "Desolation of Smaug," Peter Jackson revealed that he had a conversation with the studio about the possibility of changing the title of "The Hobbit" final film.

"The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" is initially scheduled for release on Dec. 17.
