There are 8 remaining teams in the NBA, which means 22 are on the drawing board and filling up on the NBA Trade Rumors. The Detroit Pistons definitely needs some changes and Josh Smith would be the first out the door.

ESPN's Marc Stein has just reported that the Pistons finally got the big name on the bench. Stan Van Gundy will return to coaching. He chose Detroit over Golden State..allegedly because Golden State would not give him the full roster control he demanded. From ESPN:

"Sources told ESPN.com on Tuesday night that Van Gundy and the Pistons have verbally agreed to a five-year pact worth an estimated $35 million, with an official announcement expected as early as Wednesday.

Despite strong interest from the Golden State Warriors, who sources say had established Van Gundy as their top target to succeed the ousted Mark Jackson, Detroit managed to trump Van Gundy's hometown team with the offer of personnel control on top of coaching duties."

Stan Van Gundy (SVG) would be a good fit for the Pistons as a coach. He was able to steer the Orlando Magic all the way to the NBA Finals. That roster was built solely on Dwight Howard. If you look at the supporting cast (Jameer Nelson, Hedo Turkoglu, Rashard Lewis, JJ Redick, Marcin Gortat), it's much weaker than the Rockets that got brushed off in the first round two weeks ago.

The Pistons have a future franchise big man in Andre Drummond. SVG would definitely develop him the right way, but with the roster in his control-he might make some changes to have the team built around him.

The most logical player to trade is Josh Smith, aka Joe Dumars' last great blunder. While the Pistons want to get equal value for him, no one wants to take him because of  his bloated contract. SVG would probably dispose him even for expiring contracts just to give Drummond more room to develop.

A three way trade with Houston taking Josh Smith for Omer Asik (better fit with Howard) and the Pistons moving Asik to another team's expiring contract looks workable.
