The producers of the cult hit "Spring Breakers" have decided to embark on a sequel. But this time, they will not have any of the original cast nor the director, Harmony Korine.

This fact has irked James Franco, who gave a sterling performance as rapper/drug dealer 'Alien' in the original installment. He issued strong words from his Instagram:

"STATEMENT ABOUT SPRING BREAKERS 2: This is not being done with Harmony Korine or my consent. The original was wholly Harmony's creation and these producers are capitalizing on that innovative film to make money on a weak sequel. I want everyone to know that whoever is involved in the sequel is jumping on board a poison ship. It will be a terrible film, with a horrible reason d'être: to make money off someone else's creativity. Can you imagine someone making the sequel to "Taxi Driver" without Scorcese and DeNiro's consents? Insanity! I'm speaking up for Harmony and his original vision and for any creative person who cares about preserving artistic integrity."

In a way, what Franco is saying is that the sequel, entitled "Spring Breakers: The Second Coming" has no connection with the first movie. His statement was somewhat of a disclaimer (in his prediction that it would be awful).

The explanation came from Vincent Maraval, Wild Bunch's co-chief courtesy of Screen Daily: "It's not a direct sequel, although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original."

Thus, it is probably a totally new film and perhaps the only thing they would share in common is that the lead characters are girls in bikinis.

Harmony Korine  was the director and as Franco said, creator of the original "Spring Breakers". Aside from Franco, Ashley Benson, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, and Rachel Korine starred in lead roles. None of them had statements about whether they were asked to be in the sequel, but it's a safe bet that Franco wouldn't.
