‘Pacific Rim 2’ News: Sequel Not Happening Soon; Legendary Pictures CEO Still In Talks With Guillermo Del Torro To Do The Movie

"Pacific Rim 2" new has been dished out and it looks like the sequel is not happening soon. Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull is reportedly still in talks with director Guillermo del Torro to do the film.

The 2013 movie-with its candy plot about humankind on the verge of extinction fighting back against monsters-have grossed $411,002,906 worldwide, excluding video sales, on a $190 million budget.

But Cinema Blend noted that the budget didn't include prints plus advertising costs which can run to another $100 million and the amount of profits shrunk even further.

Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull spoke with I Am Rouge, where he said that the studio's relationship with Guillermo del Torro has never been closer, with the director helming "Crimson Peak" but there's a hitch with doing "Pacific Rim 2."

"With the amount of money that we did on Pacific Rim, over $400 million, it didn't quite hit our expectations, but it did better than a lot of other films," he said.

However, he quickly added that if they can find the perfect story with Guillermo del Torro then they would be open to produce "Pacific Rim 2" especially since the first movie did really well on home video and merchandise sales.

"We're not just going to do Pacific Rim 2 just to do it," he said, adding that they are discussing with Guillermo del Torro right now how to proceed.

"If we can crack the story, we all think it's great, and it's him at the helm, then fantastic. But right now there's nothing going on officially to proclaim," he added.

It's all about the numbers, Cinema Blend said. The first one just didn't meet the expectations of the studio in terms of returns on investment.

"It's numbers, people. And sadly, given the way Hollywood works, when people are lukewarm over your last film and you're waiting to make a sequel, that wait just becomes procrastination," the website added.
