Nationals rookie Blake Treinen (0-2, 1.78) is set to take the mound for his fourth big league start. The right-hander allowed two runs over six innings and left in line for the win Saturday at San Diego before the bullpen blew the lead in a 4-3, 11-inning defeat, according to ESPN.com.

"I felt good physically," said Treinen, who was removed after throwing just 63 pitches. "The situation has been told to me that when I get some more starts under my belt, I'll be able to go longer."

Washington will face a pitcher it has not faired too well against this season. Tim Hudson is 16-5 with a 2.45 ERA in 29 career starts against the Nationals. Last season against the Nationals, he went 2-0 with a 0.84 ERA. This season, he is 6-2 with a 1.97 ERA. He was roughed up in his last start.

"I'm as proud of this game as I have been of any of them," said Hudson, who allowed season highs of nine hits and three walks.

Pablo Sandoval had a pinch-hit single in the seventh and is expected to make the start on Thursday at third base.

"He turned for the worst," Bochy said after Wednesday night's game. "He'd been on antibiotics; they're not helping at all and it just got to the point where he couldn't go. If I was going to play him, I was going to pinch-hit him today and that was it. He gave us a good pinch-hit appearance there. My hope is tomorrow he'll feel better and be OK to go."
