LeVar Burton Joined by Star Trek Alums In Quest To Bring Back Reading Rainbow [VIDEO]

LeVar Burton has a new mission these days, to bring back "Reading Rainbow" the television program that taught youngsters the joy of reading. Burton was the host of the show, which ran on PBS from 1983 until 2006 when it was cancelled. After raising an astounding one million dollars on the first day of a Kickstarter campaign, Burton has upped the ante by getting his former "Star Trek" costars to offer prizes to top contributors.

"It was unbelievable," Burton said. "Never in my wildest dreams did I think this would happen." The kick-starter was originally just for a Reading Rainbow app, but multiple media appearances, huge internet support, and this hilarious spoof of the original theme, where reading gives Burton the powers of a god, have rocketed the kickstarter campaign into the final frontier.

Rewards include four private readings by former cast members of "Star Trek." The first of event, "The Men of Star Trek," includes Burton's costars Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, and Michael Dorn, plus Voyager's Robert Picardo. The second event, "The Women of Star Trek," features Marina Sirtis and Gates McFadden, Kate Mulgrew and Jeri Ryan. The third and fourth events are solo shows with Enterprise captains William Shatner and Patrick Stewart.

Burton has reset the kickstarter goal at five million, a figure that Star Trek fans are likely to help them meet.

So if you ever dreamed of having the Captain Picard to tell you, in person, to "make it so," now is your chance. In the mean time, enjoy this 1991 Reading Rainbow, Star Trek, crossover.
