Cartoon Network has ordered a reboot of iconic series The Powerpuff Girls.

At the 2014 Licensing Expo in Las Vegas, Chief content office Rob Sorcher announced an updated version of the show, as yet untitled, will be released in 2016. Lauren Faust, a main writer on the show who went on to create My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, as well as the absolutely confusing subculture of bronies, will not be returning to the show.

The original series ran from 1998 until 2005, and followed Buttercup, Blossom and Bubbles as they save the city of Townsville from destruction. Over the course of its six seasons, the show won two Emmy Awards, and grossed 2.5 Billion dollars for Cartoon Network. The series returned earlier this year for a successful special featuring Ringo Starr.

Cartoon Network executives are simply bubbly at the prospect of  the shows return.

Rob Sorcher, Cartoon Network's Chief Content Officer said, "The original Powerpuff Girls was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide ... We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice and Chemical X."

While Pete Yoder, Vice-President of Consumer Products for North America, Cartoon Network Enterprises, added: "As the original ambassador of 'girl power,' The Powerpuff Girls brand continues to resonate with people of all ages and there is tremendous excitement around introducing Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup to a new generation. With proven success and great content plans in place, there's so much potential that we're looking forward to explore with our licensing partners in the coming weeks."

This follows a swath of animated reboots including Netflix's reboot of "The Magic School Bus."
